Mountain railroad travel was a major part of this image's subject: a presidential train winding through the Rockies. In 1903 Theodore Roosevelt made an extended tour of the western states by rail, and the cars and scenery of that journey drew wide public interest. The card was issued by the American Stereoscopic Company, whose paired views were sold to households that viewed them through hand-held stereoscopes. The record's caption data has not been fully verified, so the exact location along the route is uncertain.
