Eating, drinking, and good company fill the village festival, a scene the record places in the tavern life of the 1820s through 1880s. William Shayer, an English painter known for rural scenes of local custom, made the original, and Eugene Tily rendered it as a mezzotint, a method that builds soft gradations of tone from a roughened copper plate. Frost & Reed of Bristol published this color version in the late 1920s, bringing older English genre painting to a wide audience. This signed proof shows how well the medium suited the warm light and crowded detail.
