The title names an "Esquimaux village," one of the living ethnographic displays at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, in 1901, where Inuit residents were shown to fairgoers. The fair opened that spring and is remembered as the site of President William McKinley's assassination in September. Such villages were a popular feature of world's fairs, presenting Indigenous peoples as curiosities of a supposedly vanishing way of life. Frances Benjamin Johnston made the photograph, so the print documents both the fair and the staged domestic scenes that exhibitions like this offered to the public.
