Confederate troops withdrawing from Mechanicsville while Union batteries shell the village form the subject here, with women and children shown among the houses. The village lies just north of Richmond, on the approach the Union Army of the Potomac took during George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign in spring 1862. Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on cream paper, the sheet reminds viewers that artillery fire in the Virginia campaigns fell on towns where families still lived. Heavier fighting came to Mechanicsville at the end of June, when the Seven Days' battles began.
