Thomas Nast's *Emancipation* stands out for its two-color printing: this wood engraving was produced in black and rose, where most prints of the period were in plain black. Nast, a German-born illustrator later famous for his political cartoons in *Harper's Weekly*, created the design during the closing years of the Civil War. Issued in Philadelphia around 1865, the year the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified, it reflects the national mood after the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of slavery.
