Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony in Washington. Glass plates like this one were the working medium of press and commercial photographers of the period, who exposed large sheets and rushed prints to newspapers and agencies. The record's title comes from data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and is not independently verified, and the plate shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating. Those flaws are part of what makes the object a physical record of how the photograph has aged since 1929.
