Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records the ceremony that day. The record gives only the title and date, so the scene itself is best understood through the event: Hoover, a former Commerce Secretary, succeeded Calvin Coolidge and was sworn in on the East Portico of the Capitol. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of press photographers in the 1920s, which makes the plate a useful record of how inaugurations were documented. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from age, a reminder of the fragile coatings these early plates carried.
