Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony in Washington. The original glass plate, a 4 by 5 inch negative, was a working format for press and studio photographers of the period, and its surface shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the coating. Donated to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947, the negative offers a document of a presidential transition that drew large crowds to the capital.
