Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony at the nation's capital. Glass plates like this one were the working medium of press and commercial photographers of the era, and the collection they came from captured much of Washington's public life in the early twentieth century. The negative's record notes streaks and blemishes caused by deterioration of its original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these images are and why the surviving plates matter to historians.
