Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records the ceremony that day in Washington. The record calls the title unverified, since it came from information written on the negative or its sleeve, so the exact moment and scene are worth reading with that caveat in mind. Glass plates of this kind were the standard way press and commercial studios captured events in the early twentieth century, and their coatings often deteriorated, leaving streaks and blemishes like the ones noted here.
