Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's inauguration in Washington. The record is thin: the title comes from unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve, so the exact vantage point and the crowd shown are not documented. Glass plates like this one were a common format for press and studio work of the period, and the emulsion on such negatives often develops streaks and blemishes as the coating ages, a condition visible on this example. Hoover's inauguration drew large crowds to the Capitol, and the negative offers a direct look at how the event was recorded in the late 1920s.
