Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection captures the moment as press photographers recorded it that day. The record is thin: the title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, and the plate was a gift to the Library of Congress from Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass negatives of this period were made in large numbers by commercial studios, and the surface of plates like this one often shows streaks and blemishes from the decay of their original coatings.
