Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records the ceremonies that marked his entry into the presidency. The record's title, "Hoover Inauguration, 1929," comes from data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress notes it is unverified, so the exact moment captured is open to some question. Inaugurations in that era drew large crowds to the Capitol and the surrounding grounds, and the National Photo Company, a Washington studio, documented such events for newspapers and the public. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which is part of its character as an object.
