Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day in Washington. Photographers working for the firm covered the capital's public ceremonies and official events in the late 1920s, and their glass plates were often the only surviving record of such occasions. The record's title comes from data the company supplied on the negative sleeve, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified, so the exact moment shown should be read with that in mind. Visible streaks and blemishes are a result of the coating on the glass breaking down over time.
