Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day in Washington, D.C. The studio's commercial work covered many ceremonies and public occasions of the period, and their negatives were often sold as news and souvenir prints. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the time, so the surface may show streaks and blemishes where the original coating has deteriorated. The record's title comes from data the studio itself supplied, so details beyond the inauguration itself should be checked against other sources.
