Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony in Washington. The record's title comes from notes the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified, so the exact scene is best read as the inauguration itself. Glass plates like this one were the standard way press photographers captured events in the late 1920s, and the surface streaks and blemishes visible on many of them come from the slow chemical breakdown of their original coatings.
