Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day in Washington, D.C. The studio's negatives were made for commercial sale, so pictures like this one were often reproduced in newspapers and sold to the public soon after the event. Hoover, a former Commerce Secretary who had won the 1928 election over Al Smith, began his term just months before the stock market crash of October 1929. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the slow decay of its original coating, a common trait of glass plates of this age.
