Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, in a ceremony on the east front of the U.S. Capitol, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company captures that moment on the day of his inauguration. The studio was a busy Washington operation that documented government life and public events through the 1910s and 1920s, so the plate offers a working record of how such occasions were recorded. Glass negatives like this one were prized for their sharp detail, though they are fragile, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the surface come from the gradual breakdown of the original coating over time. Its catalog entry notes that the title comes from data supplied by the studio and has not been independently verified.
