Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day in Washington. The company's staff photographers covered official Washington for decades, so the plate reflects the working press rather than a single studio portrait. The title comes from the company's own notes, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, and the plate shows the age-related streaks and blemishes that come with glass negatives of this period. Its survival through a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French is part of what makes it useful to researchers of early twentieth-century presidential ceremonies.
