Made in 1865 as one half of a stereograph pair, this view shows the courthouse at Petersburg, Virginia, a city that endured a long Union siege through 1864 and 1865. The two glass plates, one for each eye, were made with the wet collodion process and published by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold stereo views widely across the country. Petersburg fell in April 1865, forcing Confederate forces to abandon Richmond, so the courthouse stands in a town at the close of a conflict that was nearly over. Stereographs like this were meant to be viewed through a special lens that gave flat images a sense of depth.
