The rear of the Charles City Court House, photographed in Virginia on June 13, 1864, is the detail that sets this view apart from the front-facing courthouse images on this board. The date comes from the original negative sleeve, and the plate is a wet collodion glass negative made for stereograph use. In mid-June 1864, Union forces were moving through this part of Charles City County along the James River during the campaign against Petersburg. The picture is also a useful case for researchers: it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the Civil War photographer, but that attribution is now treated as uncertain.
