Fairfax Court House, Virginia, appears here as a working army post rather than a battlefield. The caption on the original negative sleeve identifies Capt. J.B. Howard and his group at the Office of the Assistant Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac in June 1863, during the Gettysburg Campaign. The town sat along supply routes the army relied on as Lee's forces moved north, and a quartermaster's office handled the wagons, forage, and equipment that kept the army moving. The glass negative is a wet collodion plate, once credited to Alexander Gardner.
