Two lawyers, identified in the caption only as Darrin and White, stand outside a courthouse in Flushing, Queens, as counsel in the Hains case. The Hains matter drew heavy newspaper attention in the years around 1908, when the killing that led to the proceedings became a sensational story in New York. Courthouse steps like these were a common gathering point for reporters and photographers covering such trials. The Bain News Service, which made this glass negative, supplied pictures to newspapers across the country, so the image shows how a local legal case reached a national audience.
