Fairfax, the seat of Fairfax County in northern Virginia, is the town this courthouse serves, and the view comes from the years around 1918 to 1920. The National Photo Company, which worked from the early 1900s into the 1920s, documented courthouses, main streets, and public buildings across the country, and many of its views were reproduced as picture postcards. The glass plate itself shows streaks and other blemishes, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings, so the damage is part of what the negative can tell you about its age.
