Fairfax Court House, a crossroads town in Northern Virginia, served as a working army headquarters when this glass negative was made in June 1863. The caption on the sleeve places the Army of the Potomac there that month, as the army shifted north while Lee's forces advanced into Pennsylvania ahead of Gettysburg. The wet collodion process required a plate to be coated and exposed before it dried, so photographers worked close to their wagons and darkrooms. This negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a prominent Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been questioned.
