This photograph shows the courthouse at Fairfax Court House, Virginia, a small county seat about 20 miles west of Washington, D.C. Its title says the building served as a headquarters for both Gen. George B. McClellan and Gen. Pierre G. T. Beauregard, commanders on opposite sides in the early Civil War. The record dates the glass negative to 1860, before fighting began, so the wartime use described in the title comes from a later period. Fairfax Court House changed hands several times during the war, and the town's location near the capital made it a useful staging point for both armies.
