Looking across Lake Eola from the Hotel San Juan, this c1904 view places the Orange County Court House at the center of downtown Orlando, with the lake in the foreground. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass transparency issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its views of American towns, parks and landmarks in the early twentieth century. Orlando was then a growing citrus center in central Florida, and its lakeside setting drew visitors and winter residents. The transparency was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress through that gift in 1949.
