Taken from the courthouse roof, this view looks north across Stockton, the seat of San Joaquin County in California's Central Valley. The print is one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series as number 1035, and the Library of Congress holds only this half, so the second image that gave the scene its depth is missing. Stereo views like this were sold by the thousands in the 1860s, when parlor stereoscopes made travel images popular with households across the country. The caption details come from an older card and have not been independently verified.
