Nevada City, a mining town in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, is the subject here, shown with the Union Hotel and the Nevada County courthouse. The town grew up during the Gold Rush of the early 1850s and served as the county seat, so its public buildings reflected a settlement built on mining wealth. This print is one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the Gems of California Scenery series as number 1137 and listed as published in 1866. Stereo views like this were meant to be seen through a special viewer, which gave the buildings and street a three-dimensional look. The caption details come from an older card and have not been independently verified.
