Taken from the courthouse, this view of Stockton brings the Presbyterian church and a public school into one frame, two civic buildings standing in the San Joaquin County seat by the mid-1860s. It survives as half of a stereograph, a paired image viewed through a lens for depth, numbered 1036 in the Gems of California Scenery series. Founded during the 1849 Gold Rush, Stockton grew into a river-port trading center, so the scene shows a town shifting from boomtown bustle toward settled institutions. The caption data is unverified, so the exact date and vantage point should be treated with caution.
