The alarm bell hung in the tower of the Stockton courthouse, where it summoned residents when fire threatened the wood-framed town. Stockton, the seat of San Joaquin County, grew quickly as a river port in the Central Valley after the Gold Rush brought miners and merchants through it. The view belongs to the Gems of California series of stereographs, which were issued in pairs so that the two images would appear to have depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The Library holds only one half of this pair.
