Shot from the county courthouse, this view looks west over Stockton, the seat of San Joaquin County in California's Central Valley. The Library holds only one half of a stereograph pair, a card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so that two nearly identical images merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Published in 1866 as number 1033 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, it is an albumen print, made with egg white as the binder, a process typical of the period. The caption data comes from an old card and has not been fully verified, so the vantage point and other details are best read as the record gives them.
