Fairfax Court House, a small Virginia county seat about 20 miles west of Washington, served as a Union staging ground during the Civil War, and this view records the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac there in June 1863. That was the month the army began moving north out of Northern Virginia, and within weeks it would meet Confederate forces at Gettysburg. The image is one of a numbered series issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, which sold views of army camps, fortifications and leaders to a public eager for news from the front. Its focus on the headquarters rather than on battle reflects how much of the war was in fact logistics, planning and waiting.
