Drawn in pencil, this sketch shows mounted troops in the middle of a charge near Culpeper Court House, the Virginia county seat that changed hands many times during the war. The catalog dates it to September 14, 1864, but the brackets around the year and date show that the cataloguers supplied them rather than the artist. Mounted units were a common sight in the rolling country around Culpeper, where open fields and roads made fast cavalry movements possible. The drawing bears the initials E.F., and J.P. Morgan gave it to the Library of Congress in 1919 as part of a larger Civil War drawing collection.
