Few pictures on this board show a battle, and this pencil drawing depicts a cavalry charge near Culpeper Court House, Virginia, a county seat in the Piedmont that changed hands many times during the Civil War. The sketch is dated September 14, 1864, and is signed only "E.F.," so the artist is unidentified. Culpeper's courthouse and the roads around it made the town a frequent point of contact between Union and Confederate horsemen, and the drawing offers a quick, immediate record of that fighting. It came to the Library of Congress as a 1919 gift from J.P. Morgan and belongs to the library's Civil War drawing collection.
