Few places in Virginia saw more fighting in a single month than the country around Spotsylvania Court House, where Robert E. Lee's army dug in against Ulysses S. Grant's advance in May 1864. These five views show Confederate earthworks near the junction of the old and new Court House Roads, the kind of hasty trench lines that defined the campaign. The card gives no date, but Union photographers often recorded the fortifications of this battlefield in the months after the fighting, while the works were still visible on the ground. Grouped on one mount, the views suggest how the defenses ran through the woods and fields around the courthouse.
