Few places in Virginia saw more fighting in May 1864 than Spotsylvania Court House, where Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee fought a running battle over nearly two weeks. This view marks one particular moment in that struggle: an attack Confederate Gen. Richard Ewell launched on May 19. The catalog's subject headings point to war casualties, a reminder that the scene shows the aftermath of the fighting as much as the ground itself. The firm credited as publisher, Taylor & Huntington, issued photographs of Civil War battlefields for a public eager to see where the fighting had taken place.
