Where the Old and New Court House Roads meet, Confederate troops dug in around Spotsylvania Court House, a position Union forces spent much of May 1864 trying to break. Earthworks like these ran through the woods and fields of the county, and the fighting there, including the assaults on the Mule Shoe salient, was among the bloodiest of the Overland Campaign. The caption card for this mount carries no date and its data is unverified, so the exact day the photographs were made is uncertain, but the subject ties them to that campaign.
