Few places in the Civil War saw as much digging as the crossroads at Spotsylvania Court House, where the old and new Court House Roads meet. These five photographs, mounted together, show Confederate earthworks at that junction, the log-and-earth breastworks Lee's army raised in the spring of 1864 as Grant's forces pressed south toward Richmond. Soldiers on both sides relied heavily on such entrenchments during the nearly two weeks of fighting at Spotsylvania in May 1864. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year and photographer remain unconfirmed.
