Few crossroads in Virginia saw as much fighting as Spotsylvania Court House, and this print shows Confederate earthworks built near the junction of the old and new Court House Roads. The caption card gives no date, but the fortifications belong to the Overland Campaign of May 1864, when Union and Confederate armies fought for days around the county seat. Trenches and breastworks like these were dug quickly and defined the fighting in this region, so the picture shows how the ground was shaped for defense. It is one of five photographs mounted together in the Library of Congress's Civil War collection.
