Culpeper Court House, a county seat in north-central Virginia, is the place this stereograph records, and its street scene from 1862 shows a Southern town living under the strain of war. The pair of glass negatives was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose each plate on the spot, so the image captures a town at a single moment rather than a posed studio arrangement. Culpeper lay near the route of armies moving between Washington and Richmond, and the catalog links the view to the Second Battle of Bull Run that same year. The War Photograph and Exhibition Company's stereograph format was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving the street a sense of depth.
