Culpeper County's courthouse stands in the town of Culpeper, which has served as the county seat since the county was formed in 1749 and named for Thomas Culpeper, a colonial official. The record does not give a date, but the building is part of a larger series of courthouse photographs gathered by the Dunlop Society, a group that recorded county seats across the country. Courthouses like this one were the center of local legal and civic life, and Culpeper's position in the Virginia Piedmont put it near several Civil War battlefields, which affected many towns in the region.
