Wausau grew into a center of Wisconsin's lumber trade, and this view of the Marathon County Courthouse shows the town's civic heart around 1911. The print was made by Northern Photo Co. and submitted for copyright registration, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress's collections. County courthouses of this era housed records, courtrooms and offices, so photographs of them show how local government presented itself to the public. The date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so researchers should check it against other sources.
