Tappahannock, the seat of Essex County on Virginia's Rappahannock River, is the setting for this 1935 view of the county courthouse with a Confederate monument on the grounds. Many Southern towns placed such memorials at their courthouses in the decades after the Civil War, often through local chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, so the pairing reflects how public civic space was used to honor the Confederacy. The photograph belongs to a series of courthouse images made by the Dunlop Society, and its caption card is old and not fully verified, so details beyond the basic identification should be checked against other sources.
