The Essex County Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey, is the county seat's main civic building, and this c1909 print shows it in the early years of the twentieth century, when many American counties were building or expanding grand courthouses to project public authority. The photograph was made by Irving Underhill, who copyrighted it, and it belongs to a series of courthouse views that documented such buildings across the country. The caption information comes from an older card and has not been fully verified, so the exact date and vantage point should be treated with some caution. Still, the image gives a useful picture of how a county seat presented its courts to the public around 1909.
