Culpeper Court House in Virginia is the setting here, with a group of Confederate prisoners taken at the Battle of Cedar Mountain posed in front of the building. Fought on August 9, 1862, Cedar Mountain was an early clash in Maj. Gen. John Pope's campaign in northern Virginia, and Culpeper served as a local base for both armies during that season. The stereograph was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold such paired views widely to the public. Its wet collodion glass negative captures the courthouse as a working civic building that the war had turned into a holding point for captured men.
