A soldier standing guard at Culpeper Court House, Virginia, is the focus of this pencil drawing, dated September 30, 1863. Culpeper was the seat of Culpeper County, and by late summer 1863 Union forces had occupied the town several times, with its courthouse and surrounding grounds serving as a practical place for troops to be stationed. The sketch captures ordinary garrison duty rather than battle, a side of the war that appears less often in the record. Its pencil medium suggests a quick field study, and the drawing is part of a Civil War collection given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
