A civic building in the Habsburg capital, this view of the Vienna courthouse was made with the photochrom process, which combined photographs with hand-applied color through several stone printing passes. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and its estimated date of the 1890s places it in the years when Vienna's grand public buildings along the Ringstrasse were still a source of civic pride. Courthouses of this period were meant to project the authority and orderliness of the state, so the building's scale and formal design say as much about imperial ambitions as about the law it housed. The vivid color also reflects the process's popularity with travelers and collectors of the time.
