Warrenton, the county seat of Fauquier County, Virginia, appears here as open ground on the edge of town, with the courthouse visible in the distance. The picture dates to 1862, when armies moved repeatedly through the Virginia Piedmont on their way toward the Second Battle of Bull Run. Made as a wet collodion glass negative for a stereograph, it was one of many views of wartime sites that the War Photograph and Exhibition Company issued for viewers eager to see places they had read about. The courthouse, a familiar civic landmark, stands quietly while the war passes through the town around it.
