Pittsfield, the largest city in Massachusetts's Berkshire hills, is the setting here, and the building at its center is the Berkshire County Courthouse, the seat of county government. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and the firm's catalog number on it helps place the view in the early 1900s. Its views were sold to travelers and armchair tourists who wanted pictures of American towns, so the scene also shows how a small city chose to present its public institutions to outsiders.
